Daniel Repeats, Hussey & Hussey Win Champion Titles

Cole Daniel came out with both guns blazing on Sunday morning, making eagle on the first hole, and never looked back as he defended his club championship title. Daniel is the first back-to-back open division champion in the history of Hidden Meadows Golf Course.

Alan Hussey took the senior division trophy, while his wife Maggie won the women’s division. Daniel also won the junior division crown for the third straight year.

Things were pretty tight after Saturday’s opening round. Bill Fernandez offset a double-bogey on #5 and a triple-bogey on #16 with birdies on #9, #12 and #15 to nab the first round lead with 76. Daniel had his own troubles during the first round, making 9 on the par 4 6th hole, then making a triple-bogey 7 on #10. A birdie on #12 settled him back down, as he played the remaining 7 holes 1-under par to finish with 78. David Theriault was also in the hunt after a first round 80. A triple-bogey on #16 was the only blemish on an otherwise steady round.

Daniel’s opening hole eagle tied things up with Fernandez on Sunday. The lead went back and forth until #6, where Daniel atoned his previous day miscue by making birdie, while Fernandez made a bogey. After that there was no catching Daniel, who made a string of 11 straight pars before making double-bogey on his last hole, finishing with a 2-over-par 73 for the round and a two-day total of 151, also a tournament record.

David Nadeau, the 2012 champion, shot a second round 78 to sneak into second place, while Fernandez finished the day in third. Theriault took fourth place while Lucas Shorette fired an 80 on Sunday to snag fifth place.

Alan Hussey took a two stroke lead Saturday with an opening round 82. Defending senior champion David Saucier was close behind with 84, after making triple-bogey on #5 and #11. Former champion George Thibodeau was also in the hunt with a first round 87.

Thibodeau tried to make a run at Hussey on Sunday, opening the second round with a birdie on the par 5 1st hole. But Hussey countered with birdies on #1 and #2, and after a disastrous 9 on the seventh hole for Thibodeau, the tournament belonged to Hussey, who finished the day with 81 and a two-round total of 163. Thibodeau finished in second place with consecutive rounds of 87, while Saucier slipped to third place. Ed Lanigan and Mike Lafontaine rounded out the top five in the senior division.

Maggie Hussey opened up an eight shot lead on Saturday, firing a first-round 90 to lead Elizabeth Sargent and Donna Emerson, who shot 98 and 99 respectively. Things got a little closer on Sunday though. Hussey started her round with a triple-bogey, and following double-bogey’s on #2 and #3, her lead over Sargent was down to five shots. Emerson was also still in contention at that point as well at six strokes back.

Elizabeth Sargent got to within four strokes on the front 9 Sunday, and finished the day in second place.

Sargent got to within four shots when Hussey made double-bogey on #8, but her chances of overcoming Saturday’s deficit vanished after a nine on the 9th hole, and she finished the tournament five strokes back with a two-day total of 199. Hussey was steady on the back nine and fired a second round 104 for a two-day total of 194. Donna Emerson had the best 9-hole score in the group on Sunday, shooting 49 and coming in third place with an even 200.
